We’ll always go the extra mile.
When we think about farm-raised seafood, we know that not all fish are raised the same.
Some farms rely on antibiotics and hormones to promote health and unnatural growth rates in their fish, while adding herbicides and pesticides to the waters they live in, polluting the oceans they flow from.
However, there are a select few who reject that approach, steer clear of chemicals, and allow their fish to eat and mature naturally in an environment as pristine as the oceans. These are the farms we choose to partner with.
Our objective is to support the farms that prioritize the health of the environment first and foremost, as the maintenance of the natural environment breeds healthy fish that have no physical need for antibiotics or pesticides.
Our farms’ commitment to the environment ultimately stems from an utmost respect for the well-being of the fish they raise. Responsible aquaculture is a necessary component of sustainability, as a healthy, thriving farm can produce a steady population of fish while taking pressure off wild stocks and diversifying options for consumers.
At FreshDirect, we offer black tiger shrimp, naturally raised in the lush mangroves of Vietnam, harvested by local fishermen. The shrimp sustain themselves, free from human intervention up until harvest. They grow slow at their own pace, which makes for a sweeter, tastier shrimp for us to enjoy and an undisturbed, thriving habitat that’s great for them.
We source our arctic char from a land-based farm in Iceland that sits close to the coast, as does our turbot and dover sole farm, on the coast of Galicia, Spain. These farms, while ideally situated by the sea, use modern technology to raise the fish from birth to harvest, taking ownership of the full process.
Our partners at Sixty South provide us with sustainable, farm-raised salmon that grow in the icy waters of Antarctica. The frigid temperatures and isolated location combined with scientific advancements eliminate the need for antibiotics, herbicides and fungicides, ensuring our farm-raised fish are treated just as well as the wild.
