One of our favorite vendors to visit, perhaps even the favorite, is the Channing Daughters Winery in Long Island. And it’s not just for the tastings!
We’re proud to have been working with Channing Daughters Winery for eight fruitful years, and we love taking trips out to Bridgehampton to visit the vineyard and our friend and winemaker Christopher Tracy. Our close relationship with Christopher means that our wine merchants, Rodolphe and Nicole, can place their orders directly with the winery, which means the bottles go straight from Channing Daughters’ cellar to us, guaranteeing they stay in optimal environmental conditions before arriving at your door.
A visit to the vineyard allows us to experience first-hand Channing Daughters’ artisanal methods. Using techniques comparable to the Old World French winemaking style, all grapes are handpicked and then stomped on by foot before being bottled and cellared. Everything here is done by hand and with love, which means every bottle is full not just of beautiful wine, but the winemaker’s pride. And you can taste it in every sip!
Channing’s twenty-eight acres of vineyard is perfectly located at the center of the South Fork for cool Atlantic breezes to dance through the grapevines, creating conditions ideal for bountiful harvests of fascinating grape varieties. It’s all about artisanal experimentation at Channing—and constantly pushing the boundaries of winemaking—with the end goal always the same: an exquisite bottle.
This tireless pursuit of perfection means that Channing produces an endless list of wines: both single vineyard varietal wines and blended wines, wines made with indigenous, wild yeast as well as selected yeast, and occasionally a blend of both. Some wines are filtered and fined, some are not. Stainless steel tanks and barrels as well as French, Slovenian, American, and Hungarian oak barrels are used in various sizes, formats, percentages, and ages. Whatever it takes to ultimately achieve deliciousness, you can be sure the winemakers at Channing are doing it.
Of course, a stroll through the vineyards is breathtakingly beautiful, but the main event is always a tasting. With so many delicious wines to choose from at Channing, it’s always difficult to pick which ones to taste. Our expert, Nicole, says: “My favorite is the Rosato di Cabernet Franc. It’s juicy, elegant, and a unique expression of the Cabernet Franc grape in a rosé style. Delicious!”
