Our passion (and irrepressible appetite) for food means we’re constantly on the hunt for the most daring, different, and of course delicious artisanal eats from around the world. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Specialty Food Association (SFA) to bring you the cherry on top from the cream of the crop. Our friends at Cypress Hill are previous winners of the prestigious SFA sofi award (“sofi” stands for specialty outstanding food innovation) and for good reason: Their cheese is dangerously delicious! Read on to find out more about Cypress Hill and why we love them so…
Do you consider yourself a cheese connoisseur? If you enjoy spending time perusing the cheese section for new and exciting craft cheeses as much as we do, then it’s time for you to try some Cypress Grove Chèvre.
The story of Cypress Grove Chèvre begins in the 1970s, when Mary Keehn (a self-proclaimed “serious hippie”) noticed that the American food industry was overflowing with over-processed and underwhelming cheese selections. She was disappointed that cheeses were made without craft, care, or joy (the SFA’s three pillars), but this was all about to change. Led by a dream to breakaway from the era of rubbery orange cheese slices, Mary was inspired to make a cheese of her own.
In Humboldt County, California, Mary began her delicious endeavor. Without any formal cheesemaking training, she attempted to make a chèvre that would show people how good cheese could be. After making a few small batches in her kitchen and sharing it with friends, it wasn’t long before Mary’s whole community was hooked on her creamy creation. In 1983, her passion for creating cheese turned into a business, and Cypress Grove Chèvre was launched.
After a trip to France where she learned from a few masters of cheese, she had a revelation that would change her cheese, her company, and her life forever: to create a goat cheese accented with a thick line of vegetable ash. From this idea came the Humboldt Fog.
This tangy, two-layered goat cheese is surrounded by a brie-like brine, and is full of mousse-like, melt-in-your-mouth yumminess. Adored by everyone who has tasted it, this cheese has won awards around the globe. A personal favorite of our specialty food merchant, the Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog was at the forefront of the “chevrelultion” — and it didn’t stop there.
As Cypress Grove’s success grew, so did their farm and their selection. The “chevolution” continued, and now they boast an impressive catalog of different cheeses for all different tastes; from soft-ripened, to aged, to fresh, the “Grovers” have created an amazing variety. One of many amazing flavors, the award-winning Truffle Tremor Chèvre, was named on Oprah’s favorite things list—twice! Always pioneering, Mary began collaborating with Dutch cheesemakers to create the Midnight Moon cheese, a goat’s milk tribute to Gouda. Crumbly, sweet, nutty, and grassy, this cheese is so delicious that you have to be careful not to devour the whole thing in a single sitting.
The cheesemakers at Cypress Grove have continued to be pioneers in the cheese world by always producing their cheese with passion and care (did we mention that their dairy earned a 100% score for an American Humane Certification?). There’s so much to love about this company—and they make a product that is simply delectable! Join the “chevolution” and check out their collection here.
