Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, so now’s the time to start thinking about the main event: turkey! We’ve put together this turkey buying guide to help you choose the bird that’s best for your table.
You can reserve your fresh Thanksgiving turkey from FreshDirect beginning November 7th. A limited selection of fresh and frozen turkeys is available now for ordering.
What Size Bird Should I Buy?
As a general rule, we recommend buying one pound of turkey per person. But if you want lots of leftovers or know there will be big appetites, then up that to a pound-and-a-half per person. Check out our size guide chart below for quick reference:
We carry a wide selection of turkeys so you can choose the one that best fits your needs and preferences. All turkeys available from FreshDirect are raised without antibiotics. Read on to learn more about our partner farms:
Diestel Family Ranch
This family-run, fourth-generation farm in Sonora, CA humanely raises turkeys without antibiotics. They receive only the highest quality feed available. These all-natural, slow-growing birds are given plenty of time and space to develop naturally, resulting in a juicy, tender turkey with that signature old-fashioned flavor—they’re known for “all that white meat.”
These turkeys make the perfect centerpiece for your dinner table. Locally sourced from Jaindl Farms in Lehigh Valley, PA—these humanely raised birds receive feed that is grown and harvested on the farm. Jaindl turkeys are a product of decades of selective breeding, resulting in a deliciously lean and plump bird that yields more white meat than other commercially grown turkeys.
Raised on an organic poultry farm, these birds are given pasture access, high quality organic feed, and lots of room to roam. They give you the meatiness of a traditional bird with the more flavorful taste of an heirloom breed. Each turkey features a 4-letter Farm ID that you can enter into their website to learn about the farmer who raised that bird.
Joyce Farms Black Turkey
The Black Turkey is a very old heritage breed and Joyce Farms is carrying on this legacy. Their birds are hand-raised following the strictest natural guidelines—that means they are slow grown according to old-world traditions. They eat an all-natural, vegetarian diet with no animal by-products, growth promoters, hormones or antibiotics. Joyce Farms treats them in the most humane manner and raises them in low-stress comfort so they grow up happy and healthy.
This whole turkey is raised without antibiotics and vegetarian fed, making it a delicious choice that you can feel good about. Each turkey comes with a pop-up timer to make roasting extra simple. Jennie-O believes that taste you can trust comes from quality you can track—they even have an online turkey tracker that will show you the farmers who raised your bird.
Meaty and delicious, Empire Kosher’s locally-raised kosher turkeys are plump and juicy any way you cook them. If you serve turkey only on holidays, you’re missing out on one of the most versatile and tasty meats around.
Just FreshDirect Turkey Breasts and Tenderloins
We partner with the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative to source healthy, happy turkeys from independent family farms located in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. There, the birds are raised humanely with respect for the land and the environment and are never given antibiotics. This commitment to sustainable practices ensures that one day the next generation of farmers will inherit a thriving farm.
