Ice Cream Sundae Gets a Makeover

Sundae

What's on your favorite Sundae?

Rev up your spoons, grab your sprinkles, and get ready to deck your bowls, this summer, to give your ice cream sundae a whole new look.

Sure, by now we’ve all mastered the art of piling up fresh strawberries and banana bits, adding fluffy pockets of whipped cream, and sprinkling chopped nuts over drizzled caramel and flavored syrups. It’s all very delicious. But where have all the ice cream wizards gone? You know, the confectionery aficionados, the culinary brave hearts who mix flavors and insist it’s absolutely fabulous way before the spoon hits their lips?

I think I found some. I poked and prodded looking for adventuresome sundae-creators. I discovered they have no formula, no real filter, and sometimes no shopping list. They start with ice cream and often open the fridge or the cupboard and survey their surroundings for what’s good. Here are some of the better concoctions you may want to give a whirl:…

Staying Cool with 3 No-Cook Recipes

Tuna

Tuna Pita Sandwiches

I tend to be a bit delusional when it comes to summer. All winter long, I think, “This would be so much easier if it were summer. I can’t wait until it’s warm.”

And then summer comes and I remember that extreme heat makes every chore more arduous, and I end up counting the minutes until I’m in an air-conditioned room as soon as I step outside. In other words, I’m a whiny baby all year long.

So it’s hard to save money in sweltering months because my instinct is to keep the stove off and eat out instead. To resist the urge, I have some go-to, easy favorites that are cool, tasty, and more about compiling than actually cooking. Since they’re cold, they’re also great to make on Sunday and bring to work during the week….

What’s Your Favorite Burger Topping?

Chicken Wings

Burgers

I remember growing up there were several summers where my dad would grill burgers by the pool.

My brother and I would race to see who would pick toppings first. I’d toss to Dad some cheese (yellow American) so he could melt mine right on the burger itself, then I’d assemble the rest of the toppings on the bun.

My brother didn’t care – he was off building a mountain of goodies, complete with stacks of onions, tomato, lettuce and mustard, which he used to refer to as “the glue,” between each layer.

Ahh, memory lane. As we head full swing into summer, I thought I’d ask some colleagues at FreshDirect what toppings they like on their burgers. Sure enough, whenever I stopped to ask one person, others perked up. Apparently, toppings are a topic of interest.

Mixing Things Up: Summer Drinks

Strawberry Bellini

Strawberry Bellini

We’re back delivering to the Hamptons and Memorial Day is coming up, kicking off the start of summer. That means our favorite time of year is back: cocktail hour with friends and drinks by the pool (or, in my case, drinks on a Brooklyn roof while imagining drinks by the pool). Experimenting with cocktail recipes is the most fun you can have with a blender, and the best part is: they’re almost impossible to mess up. Seasonal fruit, juice, and quality wine—where can you go wrong?

So in anticipation of the season, I ordered our freshest fruits and my favorite wines, invited a friend with discerning tastes (just kidding, he’ll drink anything), and started mixing things up in the kitchen!

I’m not really one to follow recipes closely—which I think stems from a problem with authority, even in the form of recipe directions—so I added basic drinks to our One-Click Recipe section and new Facebook Recipe Finder. That way you can get some ideas while substituting your fruit and alcohol faves….

Six Quick Ideas for Peak-Season Berries

Having grown up in Oregon, a state famous for its prodigious berry selection, I learned early on that the best thing you can do with a berry is to (drum roll) just. eat. it. However, that would make this blog post rather uninspiring, so…

Fresh Strawberries

Fresh Strawberries

Most folks showcase berries’ goodness in muffins, cobbler and pie, but I’ll be honest with you — I don’t really do a whole lot of baking with fresh summer berries. Peak-season berries are pretty much perfection as they are and, honestly, the last thing I’m thinking about doing on an 80°-plus day is turning on my oven.

Besides, baking is just NOT my strong point (you could do serious damage with good aim and one of my cakes), so I’m always interested in tips that don’t require careful measurement and a gentle touch….
