Heritage Chickens: From Our Family to Yours

Heritage Chicken farmer

The Weaver Family: Marlin and Darla with their kids: Eric, Emily, Zachary, Joshua, twins Jonathan & Caleb, Jacob and one on the way!

Would you leave your office job for a life working on a farm? Two years ago, that’s exactly what Marlin Weaver did and it changed his life.

Though his wife grew up on a farm, Marlin was new to farming. He was, however, very passionate about food – especially sustainability and how food is raised.

So when he and his wife had the opportunity to take over his wife’s family farm, he left his suit and tie lifestyle for a more rural one. For him, the change meant he could happily work together with his family everyday raising chickens that he felt were the best quality for his family (and yours!).

For hungrier kids, our new Kids Meals (like our Chicken Teriyaki Dunk-Lings) can be enjoyed as a meal or shared as a snack.

Back to school means back to snacking… Hungry kids home from school tend to head straight to the refrigerator. Below are some foods that require next-to-no waiting, no real cooking, and usually no convincing. Find out your child’s food preference then make it easy to snack-and-go….

Long before he was a Top Chef Masters winner, Chef Floyd Cardoz was a fan favorite of mine. In addition to creating the tasty Tabla dishes for FreshDirect (his favorite’s the Tabla Banana-Leaf Wrapped Salmon), Floyd is a father based in Verona, NJ who loves to garden and cook for his family.

I was excited to have the opportunity to chat with him about what he learned from winning Top Chef Masters and his cooking advice for both parents and those who say they don’t know how to cook.

7 Party Tips for Kids with Food Allergies

Allergy Friendly Fruit

DIY ice pops are a good choice for kids who have one of the 8 most common food allergies.

I love to entertain – especially for kids.  My little nieces, nephews and cousins all get so excited when they see tables topped with colorful fruits, cupcakes and other goodies. Recently I attended a kids party and noticed all of the detailed food labels. The hostess told me that a handful of the kids had food allergies and this was one way to keep them safe.

Amongst my friends and family, it seems that food allergies in kids are on the rise. A recent study published by Pediatrics confirmed this observation. According to the FDA, the 8 most common food allergies are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. almonds, cashews, walnuts), fish, shellfish, soy and wheat.

I asked my friend (whose son has a soy allergy) to share her 7 party tips for kids with food allergies:…

Calling Young Artists!

Gather the kids and break out the art supplies! We’re issuing an invitation to young artists in our community to show everyone what it means to share a family meal.

Your Art Here!

To celebrate the launch of FreshDirect KidPower(TM) all-natural kids meals and support children’s art education and creativity, FreshDirect and The Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) have launched the FreshArt initiative: a call to young artists (grades three through six) to create works of art that express the positive experience of sharing a family meal.

This initiative will be launched in the FreshDirect delivery areas in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Three pieces of artwork — one from each of the participating states — will be selected to be featured large-scale on the sides of select FreshDirect delivery trucks. Also, a $1,500 monetary award will be donated to the schools designated by the parents or guardians of the creators of the selected art. (The designated schools must be located in the FreshDirect delivery areas.)

Download entry forms and contest details from:
http://www.freshdirect.com/FreshArt.

We’re hoping to share some terrific FreshArt entries right here, and we can’t wait to see what our community’s kids create!
