Heritage Chickens: From Our Family to Yours

Heritage Chicken farmer

The Weaver Family: Marlin and Darla with their kids: Eric, Emily, Zachary, Joshua, twins Jonathan & Caleb, Jacob and one on the way!

Would you leave your office job for a life working on a farm? Two years ago, that’s exactly what Marlin Weaver did and it changed his life.

Though his wife grew up on a farm, Marlin was new to farming. He was, however, very passionate about food – especially sustainability and how food is raised.

So when he and his wife had the opportunity to take over his wife’s family farm, he left his suit and tie lifestyle for a more rural one. For him, the change meant he could happily work together with his family everyday raising chickens that he felt were the best quality for his family (and yours!).

Visiting the Pastured Hens of Lancaster, PA

Capturing the Nature's Yoke hens on video

Capturing the Nature's Yoke hens on video

Which came first? For most of us city folks, it’s the eggs.

Every week, I get a FreshDirect delivery of a dozen perfect ovals nestled in a cozy cardboard box. At breakfast time, while I wait for the pan to heat up, I sometimes read the package for my Nature’s Yoke Pastured Eggs, which describes family farms, fresh air and happy hens.

A Trip to Altobelli Family Farms

Altobelli Corn

John shows us some of his family's corn crop.

Fresh corn is, to me, the ultimate summertime treat. Nothing quite captures the season like biting into a hot ear of just-cooked sweet corn, dressed with a little butter and a sprinkle of salt. So when I was asked to visit Altobelli Family Farms, our main supplier of local corn, I was all ears…

The produce team and I traveled up the Hudson Valley, into the Berkshires and ended up in Kinderhook, NY where the Altobelli family welcomed us into their home and onto their fields. We spent a lovely afternoon snacking on fresh-picked corn (naturally), wandering down rows of lovely vegetables and flowers, and chatting with John Altobelli about farming.

Exploring the Mysteries of Mushrooms

Modern Farms Mushrooms

Modern Farms Mushrooms

Mushrooms are one of those vegetables that are always available, but you rarely get to see them growing. It’s not like you’re ever going to pass by rolling mushroom fields or ranches on your way to the Catskills.

I recently had the opportunity to see for myself where the magic happens. Alongside our Produce team, I visited two of the biggest mushroom farms in the Tri-State area: Phillips Mushroom Farms and Modern Farms Mushrooms.

I left with a head full of fun facts, a bag full of delicious mushroom treats and a real understanding of how mushrooms go from the earth to my kitchen.
