Allergy Friendly Fruit

DIY ice pops are a good choice for kids who have one of the 8 most common food allergies.

I love to entertain – especially for kids.  My little nieces, nephews and cousins all get so excited when they see tables topped with colorful fruits, cupcakes and other goodies. Recently I attended a kids party and noticed all of the detailed food labels. The hostess told me that a handful of the kids had food allergies and this was one way to keep them safe.

Amongst my friends and family, it seems that food allergies in kids are on the rise. A recent study published by Pediatrics confirmed this observation. According to the FDA, the 8 most common food allergies are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. almonds, cashews, walnuts), fish, shellfish, soy and wheat.

I asked my friend (whose son has a soy allergy) to share her 7 party tips for kids with food allergies: (More…)

The good news is that there are simple preventative things you can do to beat the heat! (More…)

Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato & Basil Platter

Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato & Basil Platter

It’s officially hot — which means I need to officially avoid turning on my stove-top or oven to get dinner on the table.

For some reason, I’ve been clinging to the idea that I can handle cooking in my small-ish Brooklyn kitchen when it’s 80° outside — but the only things coming out of that kitchen right now are rushed, mediocre dinners and a very grumpy, sweaty me.

Well, I say “no more.”

I liberate myself from the need to personally poach, boil or broil the goodies that go on my dinner plate. I give myself the go-ahead to splurge on items that have been sautéed and roasted for me. I embrace the cold, the chilled and the room temperature. I love NOT cooking dinner! (More…)
