Burgers and Dad

When I visit my family in Upstate, NY, I love when my dad fires up the grill and makes my favorites.

There’s his famous lemon steak (extra-thin slices of steak marinated in lots of lemon juice and oregano, and charred perfectly on the grill), and on my most recent visit, I had my perfect burger—a soft bun, gooey cheese, a juicy beef patty, ketchup, and mayo.

Back at my apartment in Brooklyn, I used a grill pan to replicate the burger, but since I can’t get that same grill flavor, I tried different proteins and added fun toppings that remind me of home. Here are my burger creations in honor of Father’s Day:

The Drive-In Burger

  2. Next to the Mohawk River in Scotia, NY, there’s a little drive-in called Jumpin’ Jacks that opened in the ‘50s. I haven’t been there in years but one of my fondest memories is sitting behind the drive-in with my dad, looking out on the water and watching the 4th of July water ski and fireworks celebration.

In this recipe, I replicated one of their hamburgers with FreshDirect coleslaw and cheddar cheese—easy and delicious.

  4. Both my father and I love blue cheese, and as a kid, one of my favorite things to order was Cobb salad with extra blue cheese dressing. We’d sit at the bar at Ground Round, and I’d have a Cobb salad and Shirley Temple, while dad would have a burger.

This recipe combines the best of both worlds: a turkey burger and all the best Cobb fixings.

    Portobello Burger with Basil Mayo

  6. Paying homage to my family’s Italian heritage, this burger has the epic combination of basil, tomato and mozzarella.

The Portobello “patty” makes a great alternative to the traditional burger and tastes amazing on a fresh sesame seed bun.

Whenever we have cookouts and burgers, I help my step-mom make what my dad calls “The Other German Potato Salad”—his mom started making it when they lived in Germany when he was a child, and the recipe crossed the ocean with them (Click here for the entire recipe). It’s an extremely simple crowd-pleaser that I break out a few times a summer. Next to a creative or classic burger, it’s the perfect side for Father’s Day—and, like any tasty food, always Dad Approved.
