Savor the Season

Chocolate Fondue is an easy and fun Valentine's Day dessert.

Ideas for a Valentine’s Day Dinner at Home

Looking to avoid cramped restaurants, predictable menus, and make this Valentine’s Day a truly memorable event? Then you’ll have to create a special meal with stellar ambiance at home. Fortunately, that’s easy.

For starters, you’ll have to set the mood. Dim the lights or replace your bulbs with lower wattage. You can also simply light some candles. A strategically-placed strand of holiday lights can also create a whimsical feel to any room.

Next, you’ll need to make your usual dining spot look like a romantic nook. Ever consider moving your table to a different part of your living room or apartment? Even turning the table to a slight angle can create a whole new look. Then find a solid color table cloth to give your placemat-friendly eating spot a facelift. If you have a lace tablecloth or runner, place it over your solid table cloth for an extra special touch. A few freshly cut flowers can instantly complete a look.

Now – the food. This is where it gets tricky, right? Wrong. Whether it’s a full meal or simply tantalizing dessert, we’ve got you covered.

A few suggestions:

Try a Fondue. Take a cue from the Swiss and pair deliciously melted cheese with wine for a sultry evening. The Emmi Swiss and Gruyere Cheese Blend for Fondue prepares in minutes. Just put in into a fondue pot and cut up pieces of freshly baked bread.

If you want to choose your own cheese, visit our cheese shop. Some good cheeses to add or replace the Emmi blend to your liking include: the Risler Square Raclette, an aged cheese with a bold meaty flavor, and Vacherin Fribourgeois, a moist, prominent fruity and nutty cheese.

Play the Part. Want to make a dinner that looks homemade, without, well… making it? Order one of our Ready & Eat meals. This way you can pull that farm-raised salmon with lemon and capers straight from the oven and hide the evidence, aka the FreshDirect box. We won’t tell.

For aspiring chefs, we have plenty of Ready to Cook items: marinated meats/seafood plus pre-chopped vegetables eliminate prep time. All you have to do is grill/bake/cook your food for an easy homemade meal.

Hand-Held Sweets. The Valentine Chocolate Fondue Kit for two is great with or without a fondue pot. Just warm the thick chocolate sauce in your microwave (or on the stovetop) and pour into our bakery’s tantalizing chocolate boule. Then dip a sweet assembly of strawberries, rich pound cake and tangy pineapple chunks.

Big, red-hearted cupcakes, also top the list of hand-held treats. Our moist vanilla and chocolate cupcakes are all dressed up — slathered in a thick layer of vanilla frosting and topped with a candy heart.

Plan for a Night Cap. Firm but juicy, our jumbo chocolate-covered strawberries are a much-talked about crowd pleaser for a reason. Dipped in fine imported dark chocolate, just use their delicate stems as handles — it’s the perfect romantic dessert; tie in some champagne and kick it up a notch.
