Seared Tuna and Couscous Salad

Ichthyophobia! Facing the Fear of Fish

Now that I’ve gotten used to using FreshDirect, I’ve decided it’s time to try to conquer some of my biggest cooking fears. First up: fish.

I’ve been around fish my entire life. I grew up in a Brooklyn neighborhood called Sheepshead Bay where boats dock day and night. I remember that my dad went out on the bay and on Long Island Sound nearly every weekend, and I have hazy memories of my shoes squishing against the wet floors of our local fish store, Jordan’s.

But aside from an occasional tuna salad sandwich, I never ate any of it!

I’ve changed my fish-fearing ways over the years, especially with the introduction of sushi into my diet, but actually preparing the fish myself still terrified me, and I’m not even sure why!

Maybe I thought the quick cooking time left little room for mistakes, or maybe I eat so much of my fish uncooked that I thought I wouldn’t know what to do.

But when I saw tuna, my favorite fish, on the FreshDirect site, I knew it was time for a change.

On the advice of my boyfriend, I seasoned the steaks with sea salt and pepper on both sides and dropped them into a pan with some very hot olive oil.

Also on the advice of my boyfriend, I left them in the pan for 3-4 minutes on each side instead of the 2 minutes my gut was telling me I should do. I wanted them red in the middle, and I knew they wouldn’t be, but I doubted my cooking abilities so much that I kept quiet.

The tuna was still delicious, especially since we paired it with the One-Click Recipe for Couscous Salad with Lemon and Cucumber.

Together, the two dishes were light yet flavorful and perfect for a warm day.

But now I know what to do next time. Keep the couscous, cook the tuna for two minutes on each side, and listen to my instincts.

Maybe I know more about cooking than I thought I did!
