A Lot Can Happen in One Click… (Part 1)

It’s time for another confession: I don’t make shopping lists.

There are lots of reasons for this. There’s a large supermarket around the corner from my apartment, so forgetting something is never a tragedy.

I also enjoy going up and down every aisle, seeing what’s in stock and getting ideas. But there are two main factors in my lack of list-making: I don’t use recipes, and I’m lazy.

Recipes scare me. They’re supposed to make cooking easier, but they just make me panic.

What if I miss a step? What if I measure wrong? What if I mince instead of chop? What if the supermarket is out of scallions and I can’t find fennel?

When you’re cooking without instructions or standards, any meal that’s not a complete disaster is a total success — even if your successes are limited to the four dishes you can prepare off the top of your head.

So it was with trepidation that I sat down to browse through the FreshDirect One-Click Recipes to choose a meal to make for my boyfriend.

He’s definitely the chef in our relationship; I’ve spent many a night absorbed in a book while he slaves away at the stove. But when I do cook for him, I want it to be special… or at least edible.

So I knew my best bet would be to keep it simple. Something without too many ingredients or instructions or special equipment (remember, I do only have one spoon!)

Though I checked out several other options, I kept coming back to the Pasta with Ricotta, Herbs, and Lemon and the White Bean, Red Onion, and Tomato Salad.

Both seemed fairly easy and included ingredients I’d be happy to use again if there were leftovers (each recipe claimed to make four servings, but I knew I’d be feeding a very hungry boyfriend.)

With one click, I added everything to my cart and hoped for the best. Check back next week, and I’ll tell you what happened after my delivery arrived.
