The FreshDirect Newbie
My 1st Order, or, They Have *How Many* Different Kinds of Cheese?

If you read my first post, you know I’m not much of a chef — at least not yet.

Though I’m just beginning to appreciate the joys of cooking, one thing I’ve always loved is shopping. I love supermarkets. I love cruising up and down each aisle, from fruits and vegetables to frozen foods, seeing what’s new and what looks good (and what’s on sale).

My First Order

I have many friends who are devoted fans of FreshDirect, and I’ve always responded to their enthusiastic recommendations by reminding them of my affection for the grocery store. But now that I’ve completed my first order, I know the things they should have said to convince me:

  • You can grocery shop in your pajamas. (Not that I haven’t been to the supermarket in my pajamas before. But it’s never a proud moment.)
  • You don’t have to try to remember how much orange juice is left in that carton in the fridge, because you can just get up and check. (Or, if you live in a studio apartment like I do, you may not even have to get off the couch.)
  • You won’t have to change your meal plans for the week just because there’s no arugula left on the shelf or because the deli counter closes early. FreshDirect is “open” 24 hours a day, and they don’t just restock their supplies on one or two days of the week.
  • You don’t have to pretend that you know how to tell if those raspberries are in season or that zucchini is still good — FreshDirect experts do it for you.
  • You won’t spend any more than you do at the supermarket.

Of course, I might have just needed to experience FreshDirect for myself. I might have needed to sit down one night while watching some kind of mindless television and explore the site myself, which is what I did.

It took a bit of time to get adjusted — just like it would in a new supermarket — but after a minor panic when I couldn’t immediately find sandwich rolls that I didn’t have to bake myself, I began to find my way.

Ultimately, my cart was filled with those rolls, as well as chicken, turkey burgers, tuna salad, manchego, mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, green beans, Brussels sprouts, chickpeas, red beans, spaghetti, bananas, blueberries, apples, Cheerios, salad dressing, garlic, lemons, lemon ice cream and Swiffer cloths.

After placing my order, all I had to do was figure out how to eat it all. But that’s for another post.

Next week, you’ll hear about my surprise dinner party and the drama of my first delivery!
